Nifty tumbles to close near 5050 support


Profit booking in the last hour of trade Wednesday saw indices close near psychological levels. Auto, banks and FMCG were the worst hit while IT and realty bucked the trend.

National Stock Exchange’s Nifty ended at 5058.75, down 55.70 points or 1.09 per cent. The 50-share index touched a low of 5051.65 and high of 5117.45.

Bombay Stock Exchange’s Sensex closed at 17023, down 199.83 points or 1.16 per cent. The index hit a low of 16997.86 and high of 17248.69.

BSE Midcap Index was down 1.06 per cent and BSE Smallcap Index edged 0.21 per cent.

Amongst the sectoral indices, BSE Bankex fell 2.16 per cent, BSE Auto Index was down 2.12 per cent and BSE FMCG Index slipped 2.01 per cent.

BSE IT Index moved 0.45 per cent higher and BSE Realty Index gained 0.21 per cent.

Nifty gainers were HCL Technologies (3.1%), Jindal Steel (2.26%), Tata Consultancy Services (2.09%), Infosys Technologies (1.22%) and Bharti Airtel (1.2%).

Tata Motors (-3.77%), Tata Steel (-3.59%), State Bank of India (-3.51%), HDFC (-3.23%) and Cairn (-3.13%) ended with losses.

Market breadth on BSE remained negative with 1544 declines against 1196 advances.
